A step back in time - here are the medieval ruins of Wenlock Priory, surrounded by autumn colour.

A step back in time at Wenlock Priory

The priory stands upon the site of an Anglo-Saxon monastery founded by Merewalh, the King of Mercia, whose daughter Milburga became its abbess and was later hailed as a saint.

Milburga's relics were rediscovered here in 1101, attracting both pilgrims and prosperity to the priory.

By this time Wenlock had been re-founded by the Normans as a priory of Cluniac monks.

It is the impressive remains of this medieval priory which survive today, everywhere reflecting the Cluniac love of elaborate decoration.

This view was a new one for me and very welcome it was too, as I am always looking for different angles to photograph Shropshire. It is available to buy as a print here.
