Early morning light steals across Clun Castle - this was my view less than an hour after sunrise.

My day had begun at 3.10am, but the early start was soon forgotten as the sun rose in the sky above these majestic ruins.

The castle, which sits high above the town, was founded shortly after the Norman Conquest. It is dominated by its great tower, dramatically sited on the sloping side of the mound. 

The nearby settlement prospered in the 13th century, but the castle suffered a number of attacks from across the Welsh border and became increasingly neglected. By 1539 it was reported as ruinous.

I was able to enjoy this stunning view before heading off to Bishop’s Castle to deliver some of our Shropshire jigsaw puzzles to the Eliza Scott store in High Street.

Then it was back home for a late breakfast and to catch up on some much-needed sleep.
