Sunset on ancient oak known as Ronsak

Ageless and timeless - the sun goes down over what is one of the largest oak trees in Shropshire.

This ancient oak at Acton Round, near Much Wenlock, has a girth of more than 29 feet and may be a survivor of Shirlett Forest, which once covered the surrounding hillsides.

If you look to the left, the Wrekin can be seen on the horizon eight miles away.

The tree is named Ronsak on a medieval plan, and it is believed that it may have marked the boundary between two parishes.

I last photographed this venerable specimen in early spring, when its branches were bare.

This picture was taken on a recent visit when I returned to see it in full leaf - always fascinating to view changes through the seasons.
