Springtime arrives in the Thankful Village

This is one of the so-called Thankful Villages, which saw all its men return home safely from the First World War.

The term was popularised by the writer Arthur Mee, who wrote The King's England series of guide books.

His initial list identified 32 villages, but this was updated in 2013 to cover 53 civil parishes in England and Wales.

Harley is the only Thankful Village in Shropshire, and the names of all 20 men who marched off to war - and then came back again - are recorded in St Mary’s Church.
